How the Match Unfolded

Pakistan captain Fatima Sana won the toss and chose to bat, hoping to put early scoreboard pressure on India on a fresh Dubai pitch. Openers Muneeba Ali and Shawaal Zulfiqar gave her side exactly the platform she wanted for four overs, cruising to 27 without loss without much alarm.

Muneeba Ali survived two missed chances along the way — both put down by Pratika Rawal, once at cover point off Kranti Gaud and again running back from long-on off Shafali Verma — before Shafali finally had her bowled for 13 in the fifth over to give India their first breakthrough.

That opened the floodgates. Shree Charani, introduced immediately after, struck twice in the final over of the powerplay, removing Gull Feroza for a duck and then trapping Shawaal Zulfiqar — the innings’ top scorer with 14 — lbw off the last ball. Those two wickets in the space of six deliveries triggered a collapse from 27 for none to 35 for six, with Ayesha Zafar (2), Sadaf Shamas (3) and Fatima Sana (0) all falling cheaply in between.

Pakistan’s middle order never recovered. Eyman Fatima (5) was run out after a mix-up with Umm-e-Hani, who herself fell for 6 to Prema Rawat. Tuba Hassan’s 9 was the highest score among the last five batters, and her stumping off Deepti Sharma — with Richa Ghosh whipping off the bails — ended the innings at 55 in 18.1 overs, Pakistan’s lowest T20I total.

Needing just 56 to win, India lost little time. Shafali Verma launched the very first ball of the chase, from Sadia Iqbal, for six, and brought up 3,000 runs in Women’s T20Is off the next delivery. Fatima Sana, though, was not ready to let the chase turn into a formality — she had Shafali caught and bowled for 12 in her first over, removed Pratika Rawal (4) two balls later in the same over, and returned in her next spell to trap Smriti Mandhana lbw for 9, leaving India 29 for three inside four overs.

From there, Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma batted through without further alarm, adding an unbroken 28 for the fourth wicket. Harmanpreet finished the chase in style, hitting Nashra Sandhu for six in the ninth over to seal a seven-wicket win in 8.4 overs, with 68 balls to spare.

Only two Pakistan batters reached double figures — Shawaal Zulfiqar’s 14 and Muneeba Ali’s 13 — and their opening stand of 27 was, by some distance, the highest partnership of the innings. Once the breakthrough came, wickets fell in clusters, with the side slipping from 27 for none to 35 for six.

Pakistan Women were eventually dismissed for 55 in 18.1 overs, their lowest total in T20I history, beating the previous low of 56 against New Zealand Women in Dubai in 2024. Zulfiqar’s 14 stands as the second-lowest top score in any Pakistan Women T20I innings that ended in a whole-side dismissal, behind Bismah Maroof’s 13 against England at Taunton in 2009.

Shree Charani and Prema Rawat did the bulk of the damage, sharing six wickets between them for just 16 runs across eight overs. Charani struck twice in the final over of the powerplay to remove Gull Feroza and Shawaal Zulfiqar, then came back two overs later to have Ayesha Zafar caught by Harmanpreet Kaur at mid-on for her third wicket. Rawat, bowling leg-spin, accounted for Sadaf Shamas, Umm-e-Hani and Nashra Sandhu.

Deepti Sharma finished with 2/5 from her overs, including the final wicket — a stumping off Tuba Hassan that ended the innings — while Shafali Verma provided the opening breakthrough by bowling Muneeba Ali. Kranti Gaud and Nandani Sharma went wicketless with the new ball but kept things tidy in the powerplay. India’s spinners were especially effective bowling a good length, taking six wickets for 17 runs off 53 balls at an economy of 1.92.

Fatima Sana was the one bright spot for Pakistan with the ball, finishing with 3/17 from her three overs — comfortably the best figures on either side in the second innings. She had Shafali Verma caught and bowled in her first over, added Pratika Rawal two balls later for a double-wicket over, and returned in her next spell to trap Smriti Mandhana in front, briefly giving Pakistan hope of a fightback. It was the twelfth recorded instance of a T20I captain taking three or more wickets in the first six overs of an innings, and the second time Sana herself has managed it.

Sadia Iqbal bowled economically for a wicketless three overs, having opened with the ball that Shafali hit for six. Nashra Sandhu and Umm-e-Hani were introduced only once Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma had already taken the chase away from Pakistan, and both finished without a wicket as India closed out the match.

Shree Charani Named Player of the Match

Shree Charani was named Player of the Match for figures of 4-0-7-3, the most economical and most effective spell of the game. Her two wickets in the final over of the powerplay — Gull Feroza caught at backward point and Shawaal Zulfiqar trapped lbw — turned a comfortable start for Pakistan into a collapse from 27 for none to 35 for six, and she returned later to remove Ayesha Zafar as well, finishing with three wickets for the innings.

Speaking during the innings break, Charani explained her approach: “Just trying to bowl to my strength, and coaches are telling all bowlers, spinners especially, to bowl to strength and give more revs on the ball.” Asked what she was working on, she said she was “trying to get more consistency on my arm ball and be more accurate on the yorkers.”

In her Player of the Match interview, Charani reflected on the occasion: “It’s great, ma’am, a great feeling to contribute to my team.” On her spell, she said she “just wanted to bowl to my strength and according to the field,” adding that giving more revolutions on the ball is what she is “most confident about.” Asked about closing in on 50 wickets in Women’s T20Is, she said: “I think it’s normal, like every day. But it will be special, but yeah, I need to continue more and want to do more for my country.” On being the format’s top-ranked bowler, she added: “Good, ma’am. I want to keep going with my good work.”

Records and Statistics From the Match

Pakistan’s lowest T20I total: Bowled out for 55, Pakistan Women posted their lowest total in T20I history, going below their previous low of 56 against New Zealand Women in Dubai in 2024.

What the Result Means for India and Pakistan

India Women had already qualified for the semi-finals before this match, and the win over Pakistan confirmed top spot in Group A. Speaking afterwards, captain Harmanpreet Kaur called it “a very important game for us,” adding that she was “really happy with the way the entire team performed today” because “we talk about being ruthless.” On the bowling effort, she said: “All the bowlers, they were outstanding. They are sticking to their plans and bowling according to their plans and reading the pitch really well.” Asked about India’s unbeaten run into the semi-finals, she said: “It’s very important, keeping our standards high… I think I’m really happy with the way everybody is coming up and showing up good performances, and now another two games, hopefully we’ll keep playing our best cricket.” Kaur also reflected on leading the side in her 150th T20I: “I’m grateful. I never thought I’ll come that far… without support I’m nothing.”

For Pakistan, the defeat leaves their progress in the balance. Captain Fatima Sana admitted the batting was the problem: “We had a collapse in the batting and struggled throughout the whole innings.” On the decision to bat first, she said: “We know that it was a fresh wicket, and we just wanted to put up the maximum total. We know we have a good bowling side.” Pakistan Women must now beat Hong Kong, China in their last group match to seal their own place in the knockouts. Sana was direct about what lies ahead: “We will try to play good cricket there, and in the last match we will try to win and progress to the finals.”
